This 18.5″ Medicine Buddha statue is partly fire gilded in 24K gold — the face, hands, and visible skin fully gilded, with dark red oxidized robes and a double lotus throne in the same two-tone treatment, gold-rimmed with oxidized copper body. The partly gilded treatment of this statue follows the traditional Newar sculptural presentation of Medicine Buddha in copper and gold rather than the lapis blue body common in Tibetan painted representations. The statue was handcrafted in Patan, Nepal by master Newar artisans using the traditional lost wax sculpting method, with hand-carved engravings on the robes and the defining iconographic details — the myrobalan plant and medicine bowl — rendered with characteristic precision. At 18.5″ this is a substantial altar piece suited to a dedicated shrine room or healing practice space.Medicine Buddha (Sanskrit: Bhaisajyaguru — “Master of Healing”) is among the most widely practiced healing deities in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. His practice is grounded in the 12 great vows he made as a Bodhisattva, promising specific forms of healing and liberation to all beings who hear his name or recite his mantra with sincere faith. These vows include the illumination of all beings through his own light, the healing of illness and disease, the liberation of beings from hell realms, the correction of physical deformities and disabilities, the restoration of broken morality in practitioners who have transgressed their vows, and the provision of food, clothing, and material necessities to those who lack them. The sole condition for receiving his healing blessings stated in the Medicine Buddha Sutra is hearing his name — making him among the most accessible of all Tantric healing deities, his practice available to practitioners regardless of their level of experience or formal initiation. In Tibetan medical tradition the myrobalan is considered capable of treating all categories of disease; in Buddhist iconography it represents the perfected wisdom that cures the deeper illness — the defilements themselves — at their root. His left hand rests in the Dhyana mudra holding a lapis lazuli medicine bowl filled with healing nectar in the open palm. He is depicted with the ushnisha, elongated earlobes, and the serene expression characteristic of a fully enlightened being.
